Our Guest Speaker for the meeting on February 5 is Brian Passenhein, the Chief Probation Officer for Placer County. Chief Passenheim joined the Placer County Probation Department in 2004 as a deputy probation officer. A graduate of Woodcreek High School in Roseville, he began his law enforcement career as a correctional officer for the Brookings County Detention Center in South Dakota. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from South Dakota State University in 2001, he served as a parole agent for the South Dakota Department of Corrections before returning to California. At Placer County Probation Department, the Chief has been promoted through all levels at the agency, serving as assistant chief probation officer since 2021. He earned a Master of Science degree in law enforcement and public safety leadership from the University of San Diego in 2023. He and his wife, Renee, live in Roseville and have five children.
President Kerry welcomed 36 members to the meeting, as well as 9 guests. Guests included Guest Speaker Wyn Spiller, Ted McKay (Scott Cadwallader), Penny Pearl (Richard), Sandy Cook (W. Bill), and Faraz Mahmood (Joann). Students of the Month from LHS: Elizabeth Gomez, Emma Staffaroni, Colton Virrueta and Counselor Misty Alarcon. The flag salute was led by Jerry Johnson and the Four Way Test was led by Greg Kevin.
Art Deardorff, standing in for Membership Chair Bryan Ludwig, inducted Ann Elias from Lighthouse. Sponsored by Julie Baird. Art gave a review of the rules and expectations of membership to Ann. She was then welcomed with a standing ovation.
Art Deardorff, presented Susan Cadwallader, with her Blue Badge and her Rotarians at Work shirt. The Red Badge is a series of activities that new members need to fulfill, such as serving as the Club Greeter, serving as Attendance recorder, attending a meeting at a different Rotary Club to name a few requirements, that are intended to help meet members and learn more about Rotary and this club in particular.
Rotarian Joann Hilton presented Greg Kevin (currently AG) with the pin representing PH + 6 , and Alan Lowe PH +7. Joann discussed the requirements of Paul Harris recognition and congratulated Greg and Alan for their generosity. The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty. Congratulations were expressed with a standing ovation.

Art reminded everyone that judges are needed for the Speech Contests on Feb. 11 & 12th.
Guest Speaker, Wyn Spiller, gave the club a master class on how the RI Directors position works. Starting with how they are selected by their zone members, to how they help further educate Rotarians of the seven areas of focus: Promote peace, Fight disease, Provide clean water, hygiene and sanitation, Improving maternal and child health, Support education, Grow local economics, and Protect the environment. She talked about the need for growing Rotary from 1.2million to 2.25 by 2030. However, she said that Rotary wants leaders not just members. She talked about Global Grants (which this club supports) and a bit of trivia, that Rotary uses 8 languages with English being the official language. Wyn said that the headquarters of Rotary in Evanston is in the process of Tech Upgrading, the 2027 RI Convention is in Dubai and encouraged members to consider attending, and shared that the Theme for 2026-2027 is "Create Lasting Change."
